Regular Session News #3: House retirement committee to meet Thursday

May 5, 2020

After suspending its 2020 Regular Session in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Louisiana Legislature reconvened on Monday, May 4. The House Retirement Committee is scheduled to meet at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 7 to consider two bills affecting TRSL:
  • House Bill 8 (Rep. Bourriaque) would waive the 25% cap on earnings (per fiscal year) and the 12-month waiting period for re-employed retirees hired as PreK-12 substitute classroom teachers in parishes with a population of 10,000 or less.
  • House Bill 10 (Rep. Edmonds) would change the computation on the limit of average compensation (for purposes of calculating retirement benefits) when a member has an interruption in service of more than ten years.
The committee will also consider:
  • House Concurrent Resolution 9 (Rep. M. Johnson), which requests that Congress consider eliminating the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) Social Security benefit reductions.
  • House Resolution 21 (Rep. Harris), which requests that state retirement systems report to the legislature on alternative methods for providing permanent benefit increases to retirees.
