Session News #2: Board term limits bill deferred in Senate Retirement Committee

Apr 9, 2019

A bill that would establish term limits for the TRSL Board of Trustees and other state and statewide retirement systems was deferred by its author at this morning’s Senate Retirement Committee meeting.
  • Senate Bill 14 (Sen. Peacock) would limit the ability of elected board members of state/statewide retirement systems from running for a term that would allow that board member to serve more than 12 consecutive years.
Before the bill was deferred, the committee-approved amendments to the bill would:
  • Allow an elected member of a board with five-year terms to serve 15 consecutive years;
  • Exclude partial terms, filled due to a vacancy, from the12- or 15-consecutive year limit; and
  • Make the law, if enacted, prospective only.
Other amendments to the bill were technical in nature. The committee is expected to reconsider the amended bill at the next meeting of the Senate Retirement Committee.
