Regular Session News #6: Retirement bills continue to move forward

May 18, 2020

Two bills that would affect TRSL received final passage in the full House on Friday, May 15.
  • House Bill 8 (Rep. Bourriaque) would waive the 25% cap on earnings (per fiscal year) for re-employed retirees hired as PreK-12 substitute classroom teachers.
  • House Bill 10 (Rep. Edmonds) would change the computation of average compensation (for purposes of calculating retirement benefits) when a member has an interruption in service of more than 10 years.
Both bills are now awaiting referral to a Senate committee.

In other legislative news:

Last week, the full Senate passed two resolutions affecting TRSL:
  • Senate Resolution 15 (Sen. Price) requests the state retirement systems report to the legislature on alternative methods for providing permanent benefit increases to retirees. SR 15 now awaits the signature of the Senate President before being sent to the Secretary of State.
  • Senate Concurrent Resolution 34 (Sen. Mizell) requests that Congress consider eliminating the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) Social Security benefit reductions. SCR 34 has now been referred to the House Retirement Committee. The committee will consider the resolution at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20.
